Peace breaks out with York as treaty ends arrow threat
Couple who walked 240 miles to Edinburgh have presented Lord Provost Lesley Hinds with a "peace treaty" from the people of York.
There is an ancient by-law in York, which has never been repealed, which "legally" allows people to shoot Scotsmen with a bow and arrow within the city walls.
In a bid to improve Anglo-Scottish relations, and raise hundreds of pounds for Survive - a charity which helps child victims of sexual abuse - Ewan and Gill Main asked dozens of York residents to sign their treaty.
The two-week trek finally came to an end last week, when the Evening News arranged for them to meet Cllr Hinds.
"I think I speak for all the people of Edinburgh and beyond when I say how relieved we are that we can now travel to York without fearing for our lives," said the Lord Provost.
"I strongly support Mr and Mrs Main's efforts to raise funds and awareness for Survive, which plays such an important role in helping young victims of child abuse."
